On April 14th, 2015, the Stop Mass Incarceration Network call for a national day of shutdown to stop the business as usual that includes murder by police of at least 2 people a day. In Los Angeles, after a rally of about 1,000 people in front of LAPD headquarters, people marched to Skid Row, where Brother Africa was killed by LAPD, and then marched through downtown LA. The march ended near the Blue Line -- the train was stopped for about an hour to protest murder by police. (Picture attached). 10 of the people arrested on that day face criminal misdemeanor charges carrying up to 3 years jail time -- three of them have already been prosecuted, convicted and sentenced. One of the three defendants, right after being found guilty, spoke with passion to the heart of this injustice:
I have not taken one life from anybody. And these cops have killed more than 1,000 people in one year, and almost none have spent one day in court. I’ve spent more time in jail than they have. I have not taken anybody’s life, and yet I was found guilty. I did nothing wrong. And if they think I’m gonna stop because I was found guilty then they are fucking wrong. I’m not gonna stop, because they are the ones that should be found guilty. Not me!
On the same day the young people were sentenced for protesting murder by police DA Jackie Lacey announced her decision that the CHP officer who repeatedly punched Marline Pinnock in the face on the 10 freeway used justifiable force.
The three defendants work, but I'm sure one of them will be available for an interview on Monday. Let me know what time and how you want to do it -- should one of them call you, or do you want a number, etc.
The Stop Mass Incarceration Network (SMIN) exists to stop the slow genocide of mass incarceration and all its consequences; racial profiling, a legal system that disproportionately impacts Blacks and Latinos, the police murder of our children, the criminalization of a generation, discrimination, widespread torture in prisons and treating those formerly incarcerated as less than full human beings.
SMIN was initiated in 2011 by Dr. Cornel West and Carl Dix. SMIN is determined to bring forth a movement of millions of people, from all walks of life, in steadfast resistance to the New Jim Crow and we will not stop until mass incarceration and the police murder of Black, Latino and other oppressed peoples stops. We refuse to accept the non-indictments in the murders of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and many, many others across the U.S. These police murders and the non-indictments are declarations that police can wantonly kill Black and Brown people and that Black and Brown lives do not matter.
NO MORE! THIS MUST STOP NOW! Everybody striving for these same objectives should join SMIN. Organizations should affiliate as this is a national network – it’s wide open for every person and every organizations involvement and contribution.
